My Postpartum Journey

I became a Mama for the second time just 3 months ago. My firstborn, who is now 5, was the one to teach me how to listen to my intuition and, even though I faltered many a time, I learnt to shut out the outside noise. Not every child is the same and my sensitive baby boy didn't seem to fit into anything I'd read in the baby books. Yes, mama, it's hard when everyone has their opinion on what you should and shouldn't be doing and they feel the need to share it with you even when you didn't ask.

This time round I've been much more relaxed about everything. Content to parent in my own way and not be guilted into anything that doesn't feel aligned for me and baby girl.

Something that really helped this time round was allowing myself to rest and heal as much as possible within the first 42 days. Last time, I had no idea about this and kept looking at everyone else with slightly older children, getting on with their lives, and I thought I needed to do that as soon as possible. I was pushing myself to get out and about as soon as I could. This time I was adamant I would lean into the sacred Ayurvedic ways wherever possible and treat myself with as much care as my newborn baby. I wanted to be as gentle with myself as possible. I mean, the journey and transformation from maiden to mother is huge! Why are we not educated on this?

I remember the biggest difficulty for me postpartum with my firstborn was having someone physically on me all the time. I was someone who really needed her space and suddenly... it was no more. Yet at the same time I had this roaring mama-bear inside of me that didn't feel right leaving my babe to anyone else. I wanted to hold and nurture him and not let him out of my sight. This time round, I knew how I didn't want to feel and I had educated myself much more on ways
I could support myself. The whole Ayurvedic way of mothering the mother just seemed to make so much sense to me. I was adamant I would take my fourth trimester seriously this time.

What is Ayurvedic Postpartum Care?

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian holistic healing system based on the belief that our health and wellness are a balance of mind, body and spirit. Also known as the Science of Life, the Ayurvedic system has two main guiding principals, according to the Chopra Center:

1. The mind & body are inextricably connected
2. Nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind

The foundations of Ayurveda are the three mind-body types known "doshas." These three doshas are: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha which are derived from the 5 elements of nature: space, air, fire, water, and earth. We all have a mix of the three but one will be dominant. My dosha is Vata. You can discover your dosha here.

Vata (space & air)
Pitta (fire & water)
Kapha (water & earth)

After giving birth, a mother needs to calm Vata, the space & air elements. If you think about how the baby has been birthed and there is now a lot of space in the abdomen, that's an abundance of Vata. The body is full of mobile, light, dry, and cold qualities during this sacred time after a loss of blood, fluid, and energy. We're also surviving on little sleep. So we calm Vata by nurturing new mamas with heavy, warm, oily, smooth, and stable qualities. This is done through diet (warm, oily, heavy, smooth foods), herbs (spices and herbs that nourish the blood and promote an abundance of breast milk), and massage with warm oils.

I decided to lean into these practices as much as possible in my 42 days postpartum. Allow myself to be mothered just as much as I was mothering my newborn babe. This allowed me to concentrate on bonding with my baby, rest whenever I could, keep stress and anxiety to a minimum, and just heal on every level, mind, body, and soul. I honestly can't believe the difference all of this made this time round in comparison to my first time.

I completely understand that some of you may not have much support around you and may feel you can barely fit anything in. The main thing is to not pressure yourself in any way and just treat yourself with as much tenderness as possible. If you can only fit in one little self-care thing a day then do that! Anything that feels comforting for you. It's such a raw, hormonal, emotional time but it's also filled with gold. The main thing is to include whatever you can that will help boost your oxytocin levels.

Some of the Postpartum Things That Helped Me

I didn't stick to a complete "confinement" but instead I chose to do what worked and felt good for me.  I mostly stayed home for the first 6 weeks but sometimes I needed fresh air and sunshine, so we went for a walk. Sometimes I wanted to get out and just went to my parents' place for the day and allowed them to feed me and hold the baby while I chatted and laughed and felt connected again. I know some confinement traditions don't include showering however, a warm shower felt amazing to me each day and I'm all about boosting those oxytocin levels.

I warmed up coconut or jojoba oil and added grounding essential oils like Frankincense and Balance and massaged my body whenever I could after a shower. The warmth and the oil really calms Vata while the essential oils I chose were grounding.

I ate warming, oily, smooth, easily digestible foods wherever possible with lots of nourishing herbs and spices. I'm no great cook at the best of times so my hubby cooked mostly and I made a few simple things when I felt up to it. I loved this Cardamom & Orange Baked Oatmeal from milk + seed. I got lots of delish recipes from their site. You could always get meals delivered from somewhere like Soulara or The Golden Month. I also graciously accepted meals that family kindly made and dropped round.

I drank warming drinks. I love my morning cup of coffee so I added Jing adrenal tonic to it. In fact, I still do this most days. Superfeast's Jing is wonderful for new mamas as it's a blend of the Taoist herbal tradition's most revered Jing (kidney essence) herbs blended to cultivate energy in the kidney and adrenals, support healthy hormone function, stamina, and libido. I also drank dandelion tea because it's meant to be great for stimulating breastmilk production whilst also cleansing the liver, and supporting the repair of skin tissue (hello c-section). Bonus if you're still a little constipated as dandelion tea can be a very gentle laxative.

Each morning I put uplifting essential oils in my diffuser. I cannot tell you how much this supported my mood. I did this even in the hospital right after the birth of my babe. My main go-to blends were Cheer and Elevation. I popped both in the diffuser together. I used a little less in the diffuser than I normally would because I didn't want anything too strong around a newborn, same as when I was pregnant. I also swiped a little Clary Calm on my feet daily for hormonal support. Night time I always diffuse calming oils to wind down. My main staple is Lavender Peace restful blend. I also help support a good night's rest with magnesium cream massaged into my feet. Well, as much rest as you can get with  newborn!

Belly binding is another Ayurvedic tradition. The belief is that it calms Vata and grounds the nervous system by preventing air and space from entering the body. It also guides the organs back into position, helps close the abdomen and support posture. I didn't know much about this Malaysian binding technique right after the birth of my daughter but I did actually wear a modern version. I wore (actually I still am wearing) recovery pants which I was prescribed by a women's Physio because I have quite a deep abdominal separation. I highly recommend seeing a women's Physio after giving birth. They will do an internal examination and check how you're recovering. After a c-section, even though your scar may be neat and tidy, inside there's a lot of scarring. So I'm now doing massage along my scar. Please check with a healthcare professional before doing this. I'm now 3 months postpartum. I've also been using Yarrow | Pom and Frankincense essential oils along the scar and it's fading nicely.

I also took whole food vitamins and supplements to ensure I was getting enough nutritional support. I personally take doTERRA's Lifelong Vitality supplements, as well as their Mito2Max capsules for energy, and their Turmeric dual chamber capsules (these include both the powder and the oil).

I'm sure there are plenty of other little things I did here and there to support myself postpartum but these are the main things I can think of right now. It took me a little while to get back to a regular meditation practice however I focused on conscious breathing as much as possible and simply surrendered to the season I'm in. It's not possible to do it all. Just accepting this short, fleeting time for what it is and enjoying the bonding with my baby has been the best thing. I honestly wish I treated myself with this much care my first time round.

So how about you? Did you have anything that helped you heal postpartum?

Essential Oils for the Hospital Bag

A couple of weeks out from having baby #2 so I thought I'd better get my butt into gear and pack my hospital bag. First thing I did was make up my essential oil bag to support me during labour or cesarean, postpartum, and baby too.

I've had a lot of questions about what I'm packing and why. So here is a list of what's in my essential oil hospital bag... take what works for you and leave what doesn't. I have popped some alternatives there as well because what I may love and find calming may be different for you.

Note: ensure all roller blends are diluted appropriately with carrier oil. I personally use Fractionated coconut oil and I use 15-20 drops essential oil in a 10ml roller bottle topped with the coconut oil for me.

Early Labour

Calming Diffuser Blend
Citrus Bliss
Geranium
Ylang Ylang
Frankincense

I find these oils very calming and anti-anxiety for me, the citrus bliss will add the energy I need.
(Alternatives: Frankincense, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, & Wild Orange OR Wild Orange and Balance blend or perhaps simply Peace blend. Try using a few different blends prior to packing your hospital bag and see what works best for you.)

I will also use this blend for calming prior to a cesarean if this is how my babe needs to come into this world.

Clary Calm Roller Blend
Use this to massage into feet, ankles, and anywhere there's tension. Massaging into the lower abdomen will support contractions. I will layer Jasmine over the top as well to support contractions. If labour isn't progressing, massage Clary Calm just a few finger-widths above the inner ankle bone every 15 minutes.

AromaTouch Roller
I've made up a roller bottle with the AromaTouch massage blend. This is for hubby to give me a massage at any point during labour if I need it.

Active Labour & Pushing

Diffuser Blend
Peppermint
Citrus Bliss
Frankincense

DigestZen Roller Blend
Rolled onto tummy, feet, and/or pulse points if feeling nauseous at any point.

Cooling Body Mist
Peppermint
Lavender
Frankincense
A hint of Ylang Ylang

This blend is mostly peppermint for energy. Place essential oils in a spray bottle with a teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil (or jojoba) and top with green tea or rose water. You can add a dash of witch hazel as a preservative if you like.

This blend will beautifully cool the body as it's likely to get quite hot during this phase.

Ice Blue Rub
To massage into the back or areas of intense pain if the AromaTouch massage blend isn't cutting it. Especially if bub is posterior.

PastTense Roller Blend
I've packed this just in case I experience neck, shoulder or jaw pain. Headaches.

Peppermint Beadlets
These are for both hubby and I for a burst of refreshing energy. Even if he just pops one in his mouth while I'm pushing because he's likely to be close to my face and the aroma will be invigorating and energising for me.

Motivate Roller Blend
If I need extra motivation, encouragement, and belief during this phase, hopefully hubby can roll this blend behind my neck, and under my nose.

Perineum Massage Blend
When the baby is crowning, this blend can be massaged into the perineum to help with stretching the area.

Helichrysum
Frankincense
Geranium
In a 10ml roller bottle topped with fractionated coconut oil.

Placenta Delivery
Clary Calm roller blend massaged onto the abdomen.

Postpartum

- Clary Calm roller daily for hormonal support.

- Elevation & Cheer as a diffuser blend for when the baby blues hit.

- Lavender Peace (aka Serenity) for the diffuser for sleep.

- Salubelle (aka Immortelle) for the tummy to help with loose skin.

- Peri Spray for healing:
In a glass spray bottle add 6 tablespoons of witch hazel, 4 tablespoons of filtered water, 3 tablespoons of aloe vera, and 10 drops Salubelle (Immortelle).
Shake well and spray perineum area, or spray onto your pads, pop them in a freezer bag and freeze them for a cooling, soothing effect. Keep the bottle refrigerated if possible so the blend is cool each use.

Baby

I'm not personally using anything if possible on my new babe for the first 3 months except these couple of things...
Any babes under 12 months should have essential oils heavily diluted. I use 1 drop essential oil in 10ml fractionated coconut oil.

- Balance grounding blend on the feet to ground bub earthside.

- Myrrh on the umbilical cord to support healing.

- A touch of Frankincense on the crown to anoint her.

~

Notes: I gathered my information from Essential Oils for Pregnancy, Birth and Babies by Stephanie Fritz and also from watching doTERRA's Empowered Life series on Mothers and Babies.

Always dilute essential oils appropriately with a carrier oil and most importantly, use your intuition. If an oil doesn't agree with you, simply don't use it.

I made up most of my labour blends using empty, used essential oil bottles.

If you have any questions, please reach out. If you haven't started your oily journey as yet and wish to, you can order here or again, send me a message. I'd love to support you.

New High Vibe Products from doTERRA

Did somebody say New Products?!!!!???!!

I can already hear my cells singing at the very thought of these new high vibe products from doTERRA. At this year's Dream Convention, doTERRA really did not disappoint. Not only did they have Hugh Jackman as their keynote speaker and performer (and yep, bloody loves doTERRA oils and has diffuser next to his bed) and release a stack of new research and information... but they also released 15 brand spankin' new products to join their already amazing range.

Here's the low down...

With a much higher level of the constituent linalool than Lavender, Magnolia essential oil is one you're going to want to try for sleep, stress, and restfulness. If you're a Lavender fan, give Magnolia oil a try.

Amazing for the skin, I'll be using Magnolia Touch under my eyes and on my neck and any place that's showing signs of ageing. I'll be alternating Magnolia with my other florals also great for skin, Jasmine, Rose, Salubelle blend.

A few other uses & benefits of Magnolia:

- Soothes anxious feeling and uplifts mood

- Supports female cycles and balance

- Supports feelings of anger, rage, panic or grief

- Supports respiratory, sinus and lymphatic health

- Promotes healthy libido and sexual organs

- Promotes glowing skin

More info on Magnolia here

Similar in aroma to Black Pepper but with more depth and little more softness. I'll be using Pink Pepper essential oil like I use Frankincense for maintaining overall cellular health. The main constituents in Pink Pepper are limonene and alpha-phellandrene, which support calming of the nervous system. Limonene may also support healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

A few other uses & benefits of Pink Pepper:

- Use in cooking in place of Black Pepper or add a drop to your chai

- Add a drop to your water to support a healthy metabolism

- Supports lymphatic cleansing & candida issues

- Promotes a healthy digestive system

- Diffuse or inhale directly to promote feelings of alertness

- Massage sore or achy spots with diluted Pink Pepper (combine with Frankincense & Copaiba)

- Women's monthly support. Apply to areas of discomfort or related reflexology points. Great with marjoram and geranium.

- Respiratory support

- Supports circulatory health

More on Pink Pepper here.

all our anti-inflammatory supporting dreams have come true! doTERRA now have Turmeric essential oil! I'm ecstatic about this one.

According to Dr Axe, Turmeric has "at least 20 molecules that are antibiotic, 14 that are known cancer preventatives, 12 that are anti-tumor, 12 that are anti-inflammatory, and there are at least 10 different antioxidants in Turmeric."

If you follow Ayurvedic medicine, Turmeric supports the imbalance of Kapha body types.

A few other uses & benefits of Turmeric essential oil:

- Supports cellular and immune health

- Supports joint discomfort

- Supports healthy blood supply

- Eliminates parasites (according to Dr Axe Turmeric is anti-parasitic and anti-worm)

- Soothes tension and anxious feelings

- Use in a DIY turmeric face mask for glowing skin!

Read more about Turmeric essential oil here.

As with all the citruses, green mandarin essential oil is mood uplifting, energising, yet soothes anxious feelings. The best part is that there's no problem with photosensitivity with this oil as with other citruses, so you don't have to worry about sun exposure after applying green mandarin topically.

I'll be adding a drop of green Mandarin to my warm water of a morning now as an alternative to my other faves high in limonene; grapefruit, wild orange, lemon, lime, bergamot, and tangerine.

A few other uses & benefits of Green Mandarin essential oil:

- Great for hair and skin, similar to Tea Tree

- Supports healthy digestive system

- Supports healthy immune system

- Supports healthy respiratory function

- Soothes nervous system

- Great for cleaning in the home, countertops etc and diffusing to purify the air

- Add to your cooking for a delicious citrus hit

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am for this Kid's Collection. My son has certain oils he asks for every day and is beginning to intuitively know what he needs. However, these 6 oils are heavily diluted and blend the perfect kid-friendly oils for your precious babes. They come with flash cards so that their caregivers can read what each blend does and how to use it. They come in this gorgeous little bag and each oil has a fun clip that attaches to it with a silicone lid so if there's a particular oil or 2 your little one needs, they can attach it to their backpack for day!

What I love the most about these 6 oils is that my little guy will be able to tell me how he's feeling each day and we can choose the oil that will support him best. I love that I'm empowering him to be able to know how to support himself in time.

Here's more on each of the 6 kiddy blends:

Calmer: Restful blend
Helps your child relax and promotes sleep. A soothing blend of Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Buddha Wood, and Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Thinker: Focus blend
Helps prevent mental distraction and reduce feelings of mental stress and fatigue. This energising blend helps promote alertness with a combination of Vetiver, Peppermint, Rosemary, and Clementine essential oils with Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Brave: Courage blend
Helps manage stress and feelings of anxiousness, counteract self-doubt, pessimism, and cynicism. A courageous blend of Wild Orange, Osmanthus, Cinnamon, and Amyris Wood essential oils for your brave little ones with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Promotes confidence, courage, and belief in oneself.

Strong: Protective blend
Promotes natural immune defence and soothes both emotions and skin during times of distress. This blend is an immune-boosting combination of Frankincense, Cedarwood, Rose, and Litsea essential oils combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Strengthens mind and body.

Rescuer: Soothing blend
Reduces feelings of tension in the neck and shoulders. This soothing blend can help your child unwind and relax after a very busy day. A melody of Lavender, Spearmint, Copaiba, and Tomar seed essential oils with Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Steady: Grounding blend
Helps balance mood and soothe upset feelings when emotions are running high. We know, as parents, when our little ones are more sensitive and need a hug, a nap, or more one-on-one time. This blend of Amyris Wood, Balsam Fir, Coriander, and Magnolia essential oils, topped with Fractionated Coconut Oil, will help them feel more calm and balanced.

More info on the Kids Collection here.

Copaiba essential oil has all the benefits of cannabinoids without the THC. It's been such a popular oil for people taking internally that doTERRA have now brought it out in a softgel capsule form (carrageenan free).

Copaiba softgels can be taken each day to support you in all of these areas:

- Support cellular health with its powerful antioxidants

- Soothes and calms the nervous system

- Supports lung health and the respiratory system

- Supports the cardiovascular system

(take one soft gel as needed for any of the internal benefits you desire)

More on Copaiba Softgels here.

Given the number of lymph nodes in your pits, it makes sense to use natural deodorant. Yeah, I hear ya, some really don't work. I've found a couple of brands I love but now that doTERRA have released one that actually works and has the added benefit of smelling like Balance grounding blend, which I wear often anyway, I'm stoked!

Many "natural" brands can often appear great but are owned by larger companies that may not source ethically etc. So I now have peace of mind being able to get it from doTERRA who I know always source ethically, pay fair wages, and are completely transparent in their pure ingredients and sourcing practices.

There's no nasties in this deodorant that you often find in mainstream ones like aluminium, parabens, phthalates, and talc.

Read more on Balance Deodorant here.

Safe and gentle with no alcohol, this mouth wash is safe even for kids as young as 12. Plus without the alcohol which dries out your mouth, your saliva can do what it needs to.

Use it on a daily basis along with brushing and flossing to fight plaque and maintain clean teeth and a healthy pH. The Miswak extract in the ingredients specifically helps reduce excessive plaque buildup.

Key ingredients:

- Essential Oils: Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary.

- Miswak Extract: a teeth-cleaning twig traditionally used before toothbrushes were invented. Helps control the formation of plaque.

- Xylitol: maintains healthy and strong teeth.

Read more about the mouthwash here.

"Beautiful" essential oil blend was a limited edition oil that doTERRA put out last Christmas. I'm so in love with it that I've been trying not to use it too much because I don't want it to run out! Now we have a luxe hydrating body mist infused with the "Beautiful" blend!

Think citrus and florals together. So fresh. Osmanthus, Lime, Bergamot and Frankincense are in this wonderfully calming oil blend, "Beautiful."

Now you can have that dewy, glowing skin all over with the benefit of a gorgeous pure scent without the nasties that come with most fragrances and body creams. Suer hydrating and nourishing for skin.

An added benefit is the 360 degree applicator so it will still work when you have it upside down.

Read more here.

Yarrow | Pom is titled so because the Yarrow has been blended with cold pressed Pomegranate seed oil. You can see it's main benefits in the pic above.

A deep blue oil, similar to Blue Tansy but with more chamazulene, it is now going to be part of my nightly skin routine to promote a glowing complexion.

This blend naturally up-regulates the body's protective transcription factors while activating skin-protecting proteins (inhibiting the enzymes that breakdown elasticity and collagen) with the added benefit of promoting collagen production.

Supports cellular, immune, and nervous system function and rejuvenation with its main constituents being punicic acid, antioxidants, beta-caryophyllene, and chamazulene.

~

This is a basic summary of the new products. I'm eagerly awaiting my delivery and will definitely be jumping on Facebook live to show you all as soon as they arrive.

Please note that I always advocate diluting any essential oil that you use topically with a carrier oil. Message me for more info on ratios if you need. It's a good idea to always patch test your skin first to ensure no sensitivities. And I always use a less is more approach.
